Listen: Beat Connection – The Palace Garden, 4AM

Seattle is famous for it’s alt-rock and folk scenes, but not typically electro-pop, so it’s a pleasant surprise to find such an exciting and promising band like Beat Connection come out of the fair northwestern city. The band will release their debut LP, Palace Garden next month on Moshi Moshi Records, and if first single “The Palace Garden, 4AM” is any indication, it’ll be one to look out for. The sorta-title track is a blissful, highly melodic synth-pop jam which recalls bands like Cut Copy and Delorean and will certainly get a lot of play this summer season (it’d probably have made it onto this site’s Summer mix, if I heard it a bit earlier). Listen below.

MP3: Father John Misty – Nancy From Now On

You’d think a person would be crazy to leave a gig in Fleet Foxes especially after a milestone record like Helplessness Blues, but that’s exactly what J. Tillman did to focus on his solo career. He’s no stranger to the solo game with seven albums under his own name, but for his latest, Fear Fun, he’s adopted a new moniker, Father John Misty. The standout track is “Nancy From Now On”, a song that immediately hooks you with it’s vintage acoustic guitar, a smooth, What’s Going On-style rhythm section and Tillman’s swooning falsetto. While I’ll miss his contributions to Fleet Foxes, I’m thrilled that he’s making songs as captivating as this one.

Fear Fun is out now on Sub Pop Records.

Five Albums You Should Be Listening To Right Now

Editor’s Note: Matt (on behalf of musicforants.com) contributed this post to Nerve.com’s Five Albums series this week. Check out his list / remarks below!

Allo Darlin’ – Europe

At first, Allo Darlin’ seem like any number of cloying indie-pop bands, good for a few spins until the next identical thing comes along to fill the girl-playing-ukulele void. But throughout Europe, Allo Darlin’ rises above those cutesy trappings and displays the kind of pathos often lacking in their peers. These are songs of love and friends, both found and lost, but with the melancholy that comes with a few more years. And that added experience goes a long way; these are songs where things don’t always work out, but still end up OK.

MP3 Some People Say

Bowerbirds – The Clearing

The Clearing is a good album. Obviously this is the case or it wouldn’t be on this list, but it’s not the kind of good that makes you jump on your social media network of choice and exclaim its goodness to all your friends. No, The Clearing is the kind of good that takes a few listens to sink in, the kind that can get lost in the now-ness of blog shuffle. It’s carefully constructed folk music, packed with interesting flourishes and graceful melodies. Just be patient with it.

MP3 Tuck The Darkness In

Chairlift – Something

“I Belong in Your Arms” is a monster of a song, and on any other album it would tower above all the others. Fortunately for Chairlift, Something isn’t any other album. While “I Belong in Your Arms” is certainly a highlight, the other songs here keep pace with it just fine. Something harkens back to those early days of synthpop, when artists were having a blast discovering the possibilities of new technology. It’s that same sense of wonder and excitement that makes Something worth coming back to.

MP3 I Belong In Your Arms

Gentleman Jesse – Leaving Atlanta

Created in the wake of some hard times, Leaving Atlanta does what all good power pop music does and hides its troubles under a layer of bubblegum. Jesse Smith has a way with hooks, and every song is overflowing with bits that will keep you humming for days. And while it all seems like freewheeling fun, there’s still enough of an edge to hint at the sorrow below the surface.

MP3 Eat Me Alive

Screaming Females – Ugly

Screaming Females slay, destroy, wail, and whatever other buzzwords you want to throw at them. Frontwoman Marissa Paternoster is better at playing guitar than most of us are at breathing, and these songs are packed with as many tricks and solos as she can tease out of the instrument. But you’re only as good as the band behind you, and together Screaming Females create a raucous blast of noisy rock.

MP3: Fang Island – Asunder

Offering further evidence that 2012 is shaping up to be the best year for guitar-based rock music in a some time, party rockers Fang Island will be releasing their sophomore album this July, and if first single “Asunder” is any indication, it should be an absolute barnburner. The new track is a relentless assault of headbanging guitar solos, massive power-pop hooks and soaring vocals. Fans of the band’s debut or just anthemic rock music in general, should be very pleased.

The Kids Are Alright (Children's Choir Mix)

Whether it’s Radiohead, Justice or Kanye West, lots of artists have used children’s choirs in their music and it can have the effect of sounding uplifting, cute, anthemic or just plain creepy. The Langley Schools Music Project album, Innocence & Despair showed that’s even possible to maintain the concept for an entire album and still be fascinating. Sigur Rós are the latest to use a children’s choir in their gorgeous track “Varúð” (translation: “Caution”) from their upcoming sixth LP, Valtari, and it inspired me to make a mix of some of my favorite uses of singing kids. Download below or listen to (most of) the mix at Spotify.

MP3 Gorillaz – Dirty Harry
MP3 Kanye West – We Don’t Care
MP3 The Smiths – Panic

MP3: New Beard – Doom

Ben Wigler, former frontman of Arizona (a band who I’ve raved about quite a bit on here), has returned with New Beard, a Brooklyn-based quartet whose expertise includes awesome music and facial hair. The first single on their debut LP, New Beard City, is a well-crafted, refreshing track called “Doom”. The track begins all strings, handclaps and fetching harmonies before evolving into a full-out guitar jam showing off some of the bands freakier prog-rock tendencies. It’s definitely got me hooked and I can’t wait to hear the full album.

New Beard City will be out this summer on Shouldertap Records.

M83 / I Break Horses @ The Pageant (5/2)

After releasing the phenomenal double-album Hurry Up, We’re Dreaming last year, M83 were high on my bands-to-see list and their tour with recent faves of mine I Break Horses made this show an absolute must. To things even more enticing, the bands were playing The Pageant in St. Louis, a beautiful venue which is quickly becoming one of my favorite places to see a show. I missed the beginning of I Break Horses’ set, but fortunately was able to see them play three of my favorite songs from their album, “Hearts” “Winter Beats” and “I Kill Your Love, Baby”. Their soaring synths and angelic vocals was the perfect preface to M83 and from the crowd response it was obvious that they were completely captivated.

M83 opened the show with a brief appearance from the fly monster that has graced their most recent LP / single cover art, before the band took the stage fittingly, with “Intro” (keyboardist/vocalist Morgan Kibby taking over for Zola Jesus’ verses). The band’s majestic synths and thunderous drums provide an immense, all-encompassing sound and it was accompanied by an incredible neon light show that was just as cinematic and awe-inspiring. I actually had to look away from the stage a few times throughout the night so my eyes wouldn’t burn out. The band transitioned into the driving “Teen Angst” from 2005’s Before The Dawn Heals Us and was followed by a euphoric performance of “Graveyard Girl”, one of my personal favorites from the band.

The band continued, focusing on tracks from Hurry Up, We’re Dreaming with magnificent renditions of “Reunion” “Wait” and “Steve McQueen” following, with an assortment of older tracks mixed in. Two tracks I hoped for “Don’t Save Us From The Flames” and “Kim & Jessie” were skipped over, but performances of “We Own The Sky” and “A Guitar and a Heart” more than made up for it. Out of the band members, front man Anthony Gonzalez was the most subdued, completely focused on the task at hand. Morgan Kibby, on the other hand was completely charismatic and enchanting to watch while the most engaging with the crowd was player Jordan Lawlor who amazingly joined the band after a video audition.

The band played their huge hit “Midnight City” as the penultimate track of the first set, and it was great to see the crowd completely go wild when that familiar synth hit. A saxophonist came out to do the solo during the song, which was a huge surprise and totally awesome to watch. The band’s encore consisted of two Saturday=Youth tracks, “Skin of the Night”, a showcase for Morgan Kibby’s powerful vocals and an extended dance-crazy version of “Couleurs”. If the crowd weren’t in a frenzy before, they were once those hypnotizing disco beats and flashing strobe lights hit during the finale. It was like the most intense (and yes, epic) 80’s dance-club party you can imagine. And as the music faded and I began to regain their vision and hearing, the band did a bow and thanked the crowd before leaving the stage.
