Band Name in Song Title Mix

photo: Kyle Dean Reinford

As anyone who’s been in a band (or at least created one in Guitar Hero / Rock Band) knows, a lot of thought goes into picking a band name. It’s often the first impression that the listener has of the group and is a defining aspect of a band’s identity. So it’s understandable that some bands use their chosen moniker in one (or sometimes more) of their song titles.

Two of my favorite albums from this year, Free Energy’s Stuck on Nothin’ and Titus Andronicus’ The Monitor include eponymous song titles and they got me thinking of more examples of the practice. Here’s a mix of 12 of my favorite examples of band names in song titles. If you have any more you can add, let me know in the comments.

Boom! Boom boom, cha! Redux

A little over a month ago I posted the Boom! Boom boom, cha! (“Be My Baby” Drum Intro) Mix and I’ve been overjoyed with the great response it’s been getting. As I said before, the Phil Spector-penned / Ronettes-performed “Be My Baby” intro is possibly the most iconic drum beat in pop music and has been used in a number of variations by artists time and time again. Using both your additions from the last post and some of my own research, I’ve compiled 18 more songs with the “boom, boom boom, cha!” beat (or some variation of it) of artists from Au Revoir Simone to Billy Joel for this mix. Again, if there’s any more “Be My Baby” drum beats out there, let me know in the comments. Enjoy!

50 Songs of 2009 (2 of 2)

Here is the much-anticipated conclusion to my top 50 songs of 2009 list (if you haven’t already, take a look at the first 25 and read the foreword/ground rules). These are my favorite 25 songs of the year. As before, there’s a link by each song where you can download/hear the song or you can get all the tracks in a handy zip file by clicking this link. Let me know your favorite songs of the year in the comments. Thanks for reading!

25. Harlem Shakes – Sunlight MP3

Harlem Shakes’ Technicolor Health is full of guitar pop gems, but this one is the most magnetic and irresistible. The bright, radiant guitar / keys combo sprinkles on top of a pulsating beat and an absurdly catchy hook. You almost need to make up a new word for this song, because “catchy” just don’t cut it in describing how freakin’ addicting the song is.

24. Passion Pit – Moth’s Wings MP3

Passion Pit have a wealth of booty-shaking dance-pop tunes, but as seen on this track they can be just as potent with emotionally-resonating power pop. I said: “Moth’s Wings shows that Passion Pit aren’t content to just be that band you hear at hipster dance parties. The song is quite ambitious, the opening melody is played on dulcimer before a huge instrumental swell with expansive synths and jubilant piano. By the end of the song you’ve got pounding drums and chorus of “la la las” filling the sonic landscape. The band pulls off anthemic pop very impressively.

23. A.C. Newman – The Heartbreak Rides Y2B

A.C. Newman puts all of his songwriting craft and pop sensibilities built up from his day job (which is being the primary songwriter of New Pornogoraphers) and delivers one of his most devastatingly beautiful songs ever with “The Heartbreak Rides”. This song slowly unveils itself utilizing a dynamic build-and-release, but once that rousing chorus hits, the song shoots towards the stratosphere and doesn’t look back. It’s a gorgeous song and one that’s infinitely rewarding.

22. Slow Club – It Doesn’t Have To Be Beautiful MP3

Slow Club’s whimsical, Southern-fried folk-pop songs are rollickin’ good-natured celebrations, played with enthusiasm and a good dose of youthful vigor. I said of the band’s first single, “It Doesn’t Have To Be Beautiful”: Charles Watson and Rebecca Taylor call-and-response vocals play off each other perfectly and the chorus of this song is one of the most infectious things I’ve heard all year. By the end of the song, the band is in full out old-fashioned hoe-down mode (complete with a choir of yelping vocals) and it’s damn-near impossible not to be caught up in the pure jubilance of their sound.

21. God Help The Girl – God Help The Girl MP3

Stuart Murdoch took a break this year from his main gig as the singer/songwriter force behind Belle & Sebastian and worked on a collection of songs for an imaginary (or possibly real) film all sung by girls that he chose from a talent contest. While in theory, this would be nothing more than a frivolous vanity project, it actually produced quite a few amazing pop songs, most notably the title track which stands among Stuart’s finest pop compositions. Catherine Ireton’s upbeat vocals are delightfully alluring, the lovestruck lyrics are funny and charming (“I’ll play his messages / Analyze his intonation / Please stop me there, I’m even boring myself”) and the soaring strings arrangement is absolutely lovely.

Newsflashes (Sufjan, Album Leaks, Matt McConaughey, more)

Sufjan Stevens released a old demo track that was inspired by Sofia Coppola on his blog, and explains a bit of his songwriting process.  If you’re a Sufjan fan (or borderline obsessive, like me) it’s pretty much required reading / listening.  The track is not half bad, it’s very simple and quaint, just him and a banjo.  The melody is quite nice; it wouldn’t sound out of place at all on one of his Christmas EPs. Could a new album be in the near future? Please be so.

For those of you dirty pirate types, there’s a lot to celebrate. Stuart Murdoch’s solo project, God Help The Girl leaked as did the first of two Patrick Wolf albums to be released this year, The Bachelor, and the Iron & Wine compilation, Around The Well. I, happily, have a lot of listening to do this weekend.

I’ve listened to God Help the Girl a bit and it’s quite amazing how well Stuart captured the 60’s folk/pop feel with these songs. The jury’s still out though on how much lasting appeal this album will have. Elsewhere, Connor at i guess i’m floating is all over the new Patrick Wolf grab “Hard Times” and read some of his initial thoughts here.

Cracked.com is really on a roll lately, they’ve really perfected the art of list-based, photoshop-enhanced humor.  Here’s one of my recent favorites: Matthew McConaughey’s Next 10 Movie Posters. It’s funny because it’s oh, so true.

Example: Pro Boxer Ed James thought he was ready to fight Vampire Jones, but wasn’t ready for… was falling in love. Matthew McConaughey in Down for the Count.

I find the whole Flaming Lips controversy over “Do You Realize??” being named Oklahoma’s official rock song pretty hilarious. Reading the blog comments of the curmodgeony Oklahoman’s who haven’t heard of / can’t stand for The Flaming Lips’ antics are pretty great.  Here’s an interesting news story on the matter from newsok.com, scroll down for the comment wars.

God Help The Girl: "Come Monday Night"

While it doesn’t look like a proper Belle & Sebastian album will be appearing anytime soon, I think this is the next best thing.  God Help The Girl is a project that B&S frontman Stuart Murdoch has been working on for some time and it’s a musical narrative album fronted by an array of voices including some lovely female newcomers (all brunettes suspiciously), Stuart himself, and some other friends / bandmates / special guests. I also should mention there’s also a 45-piece orchestra that plays on the album.

From the couple of tracks I’ve heard so far, God Help The Girl is really going to be beautiful. I feel it’s something I’m going to want to completely immerse myself in.  That’s certainly the feeling I get from first single “Come Monday Night”. Catherine Ireton sings lead vocals on this song (as well as the majority of the album) and her voice is light, effortless, and strikingly pretty.  The strings also stand out on this song, they sound fantastical and dreamlike.  I’m really looking forward to this album.

Also, here’s an alternate version of a Life Pursuit‘s “Funny Little Frog” from the album with Britney Stallings on lead vox. Enjoy!
