20 Albums Snubbed By The People's List

Like many of you, I’ve been spending a lot of time today digging into Pitchfork’s People’s List and, while I think the 27,000+ voters got lots of stuff right, there was also plenty of albums I thought were criminally overlooked. So I turned those harbored resentments into a list (because that’s just what bloggers do, right?).

So, these are my picks of the albums from 1996-2011 that were robbed of their deserved People’s List glory by the 88% male, urbanites that voted in this thing. I limited myself to one album per artist (otherwise you’d be getting a lot more Mountain Goats albums on here). So without further ado, here’s the 20 Albums Snubbed By The People’s List. Enjoy!

50 Songs Of The Decade (2000 – 2009)

I released my 50 albums of the decade list two years ago with all intentions to follow it up with a matching songs list. Days turned into weeks and weeks into months. No such list ever materialized and I kindof gave up on the idea. That is until earlier this summer when I took a weekend trip to visit some friends in Chicago and decided to soundtrack the drive with a playlist of my favorite songs from 2000-2009. I thought the mix turned out pretty good so I chiseled it down to my absolute favorite 50 songs, gave them a mostly-arbitrary ranking and now I’m sharing it with you. Of course, belating this list for two years has given me the necessary perspective to narrow this list down to only the essentials. These are the tracks that I play over and over and never get tired of, the songs that always make me turn the volume up when they shuffle on my iPod, basically the songs that are “really, really ridiculously good looking” and not just “so hot right now”.

A few words of about this list, I’m not claiming to have made an end-all be-all “greatest songs of the naughts” list, just my personal favorites. A few folks took offense to the lack of  some genres (ahem, hip hop) on the albums list but hopefully this one will counterbalance that woeful underrepresentation somewhat. Furthermore, I didn’t do full reviews of each track, because seriously, who has that kind of time, but I’ve created a Spotify Playlist where you can listen to all of the tracks (there’s also vimeo/youtube videos linked to each one). In keeping with my yearly songs lists I’ve limited myself to one track per artist.  If you scroll all the way down you’ll see some songs that “just missed” and some per-year stats (‘05 reins supreme again in my book). So here it is, the long overdue top 50 songs of the decade according to me. Feel free to dispute or agree with my choices in the comments. Enjoy!

Track Review: Wolf Parade, Stars, Cults

MP3 Wolf Parade – Yulia

I’ve spent the last couple days with Wolf Parade‘s newest Expo 86 on repeat and, as to be expected, it’s a freakin’ brilliant album. The song I keep returning to over and over though, is the incredible Dan Boeckner-penned “Yulia”, which tells a tragic love story of an astronaut on a failed mission who will never see his lover again. It’s a tale that has been told before whether by David Bowie in “Space Oddity” or in the film Moon from last year, but none of that makes this song any less emotional or moving. The lyrics, which have Dan yearning for his “Yulia” amidst heartbreaking lines like “I’m standing here, drifting alone, and my heart beats slow, and I won’t be bringing my body back” are backed by the album’s poppiest music with an aggressively upbeat keyboard riff and drum beat. The melody is wistful and yet incredibly uplifting and even triumphant. This is beautiful, powerful songwriting. I can not overstate how awesome this song is.

MP3 Stars – Fixed

“Fixed” is the first taste we’ve received from the fort from the forthcoming new album, The Five Ghosts of Canadian indie pop troupe Stars. After their last album which I found fairly disappointing, this song shows some good promise for the new album. The song’s punchy keyboards matched with Amy Milan’s delectable vocals make for a fantastic combo and I’m really digging the spacey, electronica-infused outro. The melody is exceptionally pretty and after multiple listens has seeped into my brain. The track lacks a soaring chorus that made “Ageless Beauty” and “Elevator Love Letter” instant classics, but it still gives hope that the band will be returning to the greatness of their earlier albums.

MP3 Cults – Go Outside

This song, by enigmatic NYC-based boy/girl duo Cults, has been building buzz on the interwebs for a while ever since Chris at Gorilla vs Bear premiered the track (and then in DIY fashion released it on his own record label, Forest Family). It really shows how far an infectious sing-a-long chorus and some glockenspiel will go when put in the right hands. The band has used some simple elements and made one of the most charming, joyous tracks of the year. I was very pleased to see that they were announced on the initial lineup of this year’s Pygmalion Festival, and I’m hoping we’ll be hearing more from them soon.

Album Art Lover: Hands

This has to be one of the best album release days ever right? It’s pretty amazing to me that three of my top 20 current bands, Broken Social Scene, New Pornographers, and The Hold Steady all have a new albums out today (and The National next week!). Anyway, the album art for The Hold Steady’s Heaven Is Whenever got me thinking of the multitude of hands-themed album covers, so it’s a perfect opportunity to add another edition to my ongoing album art lover feature. This is a mix of 10 albums featuring hands.

Looking through my collection of hand-themed covers would indicate they are especially popular among veteran indie rock bands. Also it appears most of the times the hands seem to be either reach for something or lingering lifelessly on the cover, make of that what you will. Note that this mix does not include just any albums with hands on it, only covers where a hand is the primary visual element (which is why albums like Funeral and Crooked Rain Crooked Rain didn’t make it). View the cover art and download an MP3 from each album below.

MP3 The Hold Steady – The Weekenders

MP3 Spoon – Jonathon Fisk

MP3 Stars – Ageless Beauty

MP3 The Antlers – Two

MP3 Spiritualized – She Kissed Me (It Felt Like A Hit)

MP3 Okkervil River – Unless It’s Kicks

MP3 Low – (That’s How You Sing) Amazing Grace

MP3 Godspeed You! Black Emperor – Lift Yr. Skinny Fists, Like Antennas to Heaven…

MP3 Afghan Wigs – You My Flower

MP3 Yeah Yeah Yeahs – Hysteric

50 Albums of the Decade

I told myself I wasn’t going to do a decades album list. I mean how can you really rank all your favorite albums over a period of ten years that isn’t even completed yet? Over the last couple of months though, I found myself slowly beginning to compile a list of my albums from the 00’s that I loved and I then I began chiseling the list down to around 50 albums. I guess my love for making lists got in the way of the logic and reasoning I had for not making a list. Also since, I started this blog around the middle of the decade I thought only fair that I share this list to acknowledge those great albums that I wasn’t around to write about or put into a fancy EOY list.

A few words of about this list, firstly, these are my personal favorites of the decade and not the end-all be-all of decade-end lists. I realize that some genres (ahem, hip hop) are being woefully underrepresented because of this. Secondably, I would have liked to do full-scale reviews for each album but life kept getting in the way so instead for each album I’ve linked reviews that I feel capture the spirit of the album (click the album cover to go to there). Scroll all the way down to see some albums that “just missed” and some per-year stats (if you want to know which year is best, it’s between ’02 and ’05). So without any further ado, here’s the top 50 albums of the decade according to me. Feel free to dispute or agree with my choices in the comments. Enjoy!

Album Cover Look-Alikes Mix

Inspired by the whole U2-ripping-off-our-album-cover controversy (if you haven’t already heard, read about it here), I’ve decided to make a mix featuring album covers that have striking, and seemingly accidental, similarities to one another.  It’s like that movie where the Olsen twins run into each other at summer camp and discover they are “identical strangers”.  Except none of these albums feature the talents of Steve Guttenburg and Kirstie Alley, which is disappointing to say the least.  So here you are.  Enjoy!

MP3 Explosions in the Sky – Your Hand in Mine
MP3 Stars – Ageless Beauty

MP3 Broken Social Scene – Ibi Dreams Of Pavement (A Better Day)
MP3 Parts and Labor – Fractured Skies

Falling Slowly: 19 Love Songs (Our Wedding Mix)

Wedding CD Print

The day is finally here.  In a few hours I’m going to be a married man and this is the mix that we are giving out as CD favors (along with a few random musings that I included in a booklet) to the guests.   I want to thank all my readers for the kind words over the years about me and Celeste, and for reading what I have to say here.  I’m going to be gone for a week, honeymooning, but I hope you enjoy this mix while I’m away. Huzzah!

1. Sleeping At Last – Umbrellas
This is “our song”.  I proposed to Celeste at a Sleeping At Last concert while this song was playing, after a special dedication from the band.  We also shared our first dance to “Umbrellas”.

2. Sigur Ros – Hoppipolla
“Hoppipolla” (which is Icelandic for “Jumping Into Puddles”) is the song that played during the recessional and is one of the most beautiful songs I’ve ever heard.

3. Iron & Wine – Love and Some Verses
Iron & Wine is Celeste’s favorite band and this is one of their prettiest love songs.  Sean and Whitney gave a lovely performance of this song at our ceremony.

4. The Frames – Falling Slowly
This beautiful track is the theme to the film Once, it won best original song last year at the Oscars and is one of our favorite love songs.

5. The The – This Is The Day
This is an awesome wedding song and who doesn’t love accordian solos?

6. Nada Surf – Always Love
We both love the lyrics to this infectious song: “Always love , Hate will get you everytime”.   Not bad advice, right?

7. Feist – Mushaboom
Feist is most famous for her “1234 “ iPod commercial, but this song is her best.  The lyrics are about starting your life together and not having much other than love.  Sounds like us!

8. U2 – Unchained Melody
This is U2’s enchanting version of the classic Righteous Brothers’ love song.

9. Barry Louis Polisar- All I Want
A cutesy folk tune with some clever love metaphors and a zippy harmonica solo.

10. Sufjan Stevens – Dress Looks Nice On You
Sufjan Stevens is my favorite singer/songwriter (take note, music appreciators) and I love just about everything he’s done.  This gorgeous acoustic piece is no exception.

11. Stars – Ageless Beauty (The Most Serene Republic Mix)
This is the acoustic version of one of my all-time favorite songs.  Brings a huge smile to my face every time I hear it.

12. Bob Dylan – I Want You
This is probably Dylan’s most accessible, irony-free track, and it’s one of his best.

13. Islands – Jogging Gorgeous Summer
This mix needed a bit more tropical flair.  I love the lyric “Millions of sunsets but the one I remember, the one where you told me you’d love me forever”.

14. Bright Eyes – First Day of My Life
This is a folky love song that deserves the title of modern classic.  It’s a heart-tugging, extremely honest track and the melody is lovely.

15. R.E.M. – At My Most Beautiful
One of my favorite ballads.  This song is just completely heartwarming.

15. Headlights – Cherry Tulips
Headlights is an awesome band from Champaign, IL. This gushing love song was just released this year and it’s already one of my favorite indie pop songs.

17. Belle & Sebastian – Funny Little Frog
One of my personal favorite bands, I could pick a dozen tracks from Scotland’s Belle & Sebastian to add to this list. This is such a easygoing, irresistable love song.  What other band can rhyme court with throat so convincingly?

17. Wilco – On and On and On
Wilco is another wonderful band that is very meaningful to me personally. “On and On and On” is their ode to marriage.  The end of this song is simply magnificent.

19. U2 – Can’t Help Falling In Love
U2 closed all their shows on their Zoo TV tour with this passionate, gorgeous cover.  I get chills every time I hear Bono hit that falsetto.  It’s the perfect song to end our mix.

On April 2 Mix

Although yesterday it was quite chilly outside, I’ve been told that starting today it’s only going to be warm days and sunshine. I’m more than ready to put that harsh winter behind me and start bathing in sunny goodness. Here’s a mix of lazy, floating springtime tunes I like to call the “On April 2 Mix”.

As you might have figured out it the mix gets it’s name and inspiration from the Headlights song by the same title, which opens the mix perfectly with its bright and cheery spirit. From there we have the charmingly simple “Where Does The Time Go?” and the gorgeous bird-like harmonies of The Rosebud’s “Blue Bird”. Those Chrysler commercials have put “This Boy” by I’m From Barcelona on my mind recently and I think it fits perfectly here. I wanted to use Donovan’s “Jennifer Juniper” here, but I only have the live version. Either way, “Happiness Runs” works just as well and has some of my favorite girl/guy harmonies. Next is Let’s Go Sailing’s delightful “Icicles” and The Sea and Cake with the jangly and sublime “Jacking The Ball”. Finally, we have Stars’ lovely ballad “Calendar Girl”, which ends the mix on a triumphant high note.

1. Headlights – On April 2
2. The Innocence Mission – Where Does The Time Go?
3. The Rosebuds – Blue Bird
4. I’m From Barcelona – This Boy
5. Donovan – Happiness Runs
6. Let’s Go Sailing – Icicles
7. The Sea and Cake – Jacking The Ball
8. Stars – Calendar Girl

Have you heard of this Hype MACHINE?

Anthony and the team have been working hard at the new Hype Machine, and it’s a thing of beauty. I’ve been using the beta for about a week now and can tell you that the site has been given a complete redesign. The new site is much more visual-based and I’m loving the new features (the key word being “love“, you’ll see why). They’re going to unveil the site today when 10,000 people are watching, and while I’m writing this about 3000 people are on the site. That means if all 7,000 of my readers (number might not be accurate) clicked this link right now, we could all be viewing the new Hype Machine right now and would be viewing MP3s from across the blogosphere. Like these two below!

My Top 25 Albums of '05

It’s the end of the year and as usual, best of… lists are appearing all over the place. It’s been a very impressive year for music, in my opinion, and I’ve loved reading all the blogs out there and discovering new music. Thanks to You Ain’t No Picasso, Gorilla vs. Bear, My Old Kentucky Blog, and countless others for turning me on to some of the best music out there. These are my personal favorite albums of the year, and the each one comes with a free MP3 download.

Thanks for reading and supporting my blog, I’ve immensely enjoyed running this site and look forward to another year of educating all those illiterate kids out there with music. So grab an Orange Mocha Frappachino and enjoy some of the best music this year has to offer.

25. Minus The Bear – Menos El Oso (read original post)

Some people may consider this Bloc Party-lite but I still quite enjoy it. Great driving music.
MP3: Hooray

24. Mates of State –

All Day

I realize this is only a four song EP, but it gave us one of the best pop songs of the year in “Goods” and a really interesting version of Bowie’s “Starman” – so I’m counting it.
MP3: Goods

23. The Subways – Young For Eternity

Thank the O.C. for this one. The Subways were featured on it this season and all their songs were very strong. The song below might have my favorite riff of the year.
MP3: I Want To Hear What You Have Got To Say

22. matt pond PA –

Several Arrows Later

I realize that this isn’t as good an effort as matt pond PA has put forth in the past (see Emblems), but it still features some really great jangle pop.
MP3: From Debris

21. Ben Folds – Songs For Silverman (read original post)

Shows off Ben Folds technical piano skills, and still provides some of the catchiest pop/rock around.
MP3: You To Thank

20. The Go! Team –

Thunder, Lightning Strike

My favorite album to put on for an unsuspecting listener. Their expression is usually “What the heck is this?” One of the funnest albums to listen to all year.
MP3: Huddle Formation

19. Mae –

The Everglow

Rapid-rising Jimmy Eat World-inspired melodic rock band. When they’re huge, I can say that I listened to them when they were recording in their garage.
MP3: Suspension

18. Beck – Guero

I have to thank my girlfriend for getting me into this album, and Beck in general. Still the funkiest white boy around.
MP3: E-Pro

17. Belle & Sebastian – Push Barman to Open Wounds (read original post)

It’s wonderful to have all of B&S’s EP’s in this easily accessible package. Full of catchy and good-natured “twee” pop.
MP3 Photo Jenny

16. The Rosebuds –

Birds Make Good Neighbors

Very fast rising CD on the list for me. Moved up a couple steps each day, and might have made it to the top ten if I had it longer. Beautiful and well-crafted album.
MP3: Blue Bird

15. The Cloud Room – The Cloud Room (read original post)

Incredibly catchy music. I love playing The Cloud Room on my iPod while walking between classes.
MP3: Hey Now Now

14. New Pornographers –

Twin Cinema

This album took a little longer for me to get into, but once I did it I found it very rewarding. I love the creativity on this album.
MP3: Twin Cinema

13. Bright Eyes –

I’m Wide Awake, It’s Morning

While I prefer Lifted, this album has some of Conor Oberst’s best constructed music ever, continuing to prove his songwriting genius. The song below could be the best love song this year.
MP3: We Are Nowhere And It’s Now

12. Copeland – In Motion (read original post)

Aaron Marsh creates some of the most angelic and emotional music I’ve heard, and Copeland is oozing with potential. Copeland holds a special place for me since they’re the first band my girlfriend and I saw together.
MP3: Don’t Slow Down

11. Andrew Bird –

Andrew Bird & the Mysterious Production of Eggs

It’s amazing how quickly albums can jump on you, and stick with you. I’ve only had this CD very shortly, but already I know it deserves a spot this high on my list. Breathtaking arrangements.
MP3: A Nervous Tic Motion of the Head to the Left

10. Franz Ferdinand – You Could Have It So Much Better (read original post)

This album took me completely by surprise. I never really got into Franz Ferdinand’s first album but I was hooked on this one from the killer opening all the way to the end. It fits in more hooks then I thought possible and even a couple 60’s style ballads to top it off.
MP3: Walk Away (acoustic)

9. Sigur Ros-

Takk

It’s hard to put put this album into words but here are some – joyous, inspirational, awe-inspiring.
MP3: Saeglopur

8. Various Artists – Stubbs The Zombie Soundtrack (read original post)

It’s a bit hard to explain what attracts me to this soundtrack so much. One of my musical phases back in Jr High was “oldies” and I listened almost exclusively to hits of the 50’s and 60’s. To reconcile those old likes with some of my favorite bands like Rogue Wave and Death Cab for Cutie is something that makes me excited and overjoyed on each listen.
MP3: Oranger – Mr. Sandman

7. Stars –

Set Yourself On Fire

If ever an album can be summed up with a song, I think this one can. Ageless Beauty is great way to describe Set Yourself On Fire, both as a description of the CD and as a incredible piece of music.
MP3: Ageless Beauty

6. We Are Scientists –

With Love and Squalor

My favorite album to rock out to this year. Fast-paced, guitar-heavy, no-nonsense music thats fun to listen to.
MP3: Inaction

5. Death Cab for Cutie – Plans (read original post)

Death Cab for Cutie still remain my favorite band in the indie genre, and this album, while being a slight step backwards from Transatlanticism, is nowhere close to being a disappoinment. Full of the intimate lyrics and beautiful melodies that Death Cab is known for.
MP3: I Will Follow You Into The Dark

4. Bloc Party – Silent Alarm

Remains consistently amazing the whole album. Has both my favorite drumming in an album of this year and the best opening track in “Like Eating Glass”

MP3: Banquet

3. Rogue Wave –

Descended By Vultures

This is a incredibly rich and detailed album, with amazing vocal arrangements and a large arsenal of sounds. It’s harder tracks can sound like Sunny Day Real Estate at times (which is a very good thing), but they don’t overshadow the equally fantastic acoustic tracks.
MP3: Publish My Love

2. The Decemberists –

Picaresque

Storytelling at its best, and the best band ever to feature an accordian. They have one of the most unique and interesting styles I’ve ever heard, and this is my favorite album of theirs.
MP3: Sixteen Military Wives

drum roll please…

1. Sufjan Stevens – Illinois (concert review/pictures)

There’s not much to say about this album that hasn’t already been said by either me or anyone else. Listening to this album is a life-altering experience and it gave me an entirely new outlook on music in general. This album gave me a new excitement about music and even influenced me to start blogging. This album truly makes me proud to live in a state mostly known for corn fields, and no other album before it has taken me on such a sincere and spritual journey.

I’m sure nearly all of my reader’s have all of the tracks I would post (if you don’t visit here) so for the MP3, I’m providing an acoustic version of one of the many standout tracks on the album.
MP3: The Man of Metropolis Steals Our Hearts (Live @ KCRW)

Other:
Artists That Probably Would Have Made The List, had I gotten into them sooner…
Jose Gonzalez
Clap Your Hands Say Yeah!
The National

Song of the Year:
A underrated treasure from Illinois. The song mixes perfectly the acoustic sincerity of Sufjan with his elaborate large scale productions. The strings create the perfect buzz sound of a wasp and there’s just something that about Sufjan singing “Hallelujah”.

MP3 The Predatory Wasps of the Palisades Are Out To Get Us!
